Vauxhall Alternator & Vauxhall Starter Motor Fault Diagnosis
If your starter motor is rotating slowly and inside the car you notice that your lights are not as bright then your battery may be weak or failing. Check the water levels in the battery and top them up with distilled water if needed. An auto electrician can also check your battery.
When you turn the ignition on and notice that nothing is happening and the starter motor is not moving at all then check the connection from the battery to the vauxhall starter motor. Rust can develop in between the starter motor and the battery lead connector preventing a solid connection. If this is the case then give it a good clean.
Sometimes the starter motor gear sticks. This can be diagnosed by just hearing a clicking noise when you try the ignition. Make sure the gear is in 5th and the hand break is off and then rock the car backwards and forwards. This may release the sticking gear in the vauxhall starter motor.
Having a loose alternator belt can also cause problems with charing the battery. If there is a distinct screeching noise when you are driving then your belt will probably be loose. Take this to an auto electrician to have the belt tightened.
A multimeter can be used to test your vauxhall alternator. By setting the meter to DC current and connecting it to the terminals on the battery can check this. Make sure to rev the car to 2500rpm.
The meter will read between 13.5 & 14.4 volts. If the reading is below this figure then your vauxhall alternator is failing.
Remember that if you are in any doubt at all then get the vauxhall starter motor or vauxhall alternator checked by a qualified auto electrician. Better to be safe than sorry!
